Open Book for the _______ Mind.

You were never meant to be an audience. You were always meant to be a chorus.

Somewhere, there's a sentence only you could write. A paragraph only your particular history, your specific friction, your exact lens on the world could produce. We built Open Book to find it — and to give it a place to land.

Open Book is a facilitated writing workshop where participants gather around an unfinished text and co-author the next chapter — in real time, in a room, with each other. No previous publication credits required. No finished drafts. No performing expertise. Just a prompt, a table, and the people who showed up.

What you're contributing to

Your session feeds into Works Left Undone — a living trilogy exploring what happens when human expression gets compressed. The three volumes — Works on My Own Machine, Left to Our Own Devices, and Undone by Their Own Hand — aren't finished books waiting to be read. They're deliberate scaffolds waiting for human context. Yours.

The companion volume, Live Among the Stars, pushes further: exploring how life emerges from information, why language is the universe's own compression strategy, and whether humanity can survive learning to see itself again — without the anesthesia of systems that have flattened us into audiences.

These works don't have a single author. They have a repository.

How a session works

Each Open Book session runs ~90 minutes and follows a four-step architecture:

  1. Shared Orientation — The facilitator presents the session's interpretive lens and prompt. This might be a meditation on how ideas get compressed for broadcast, a question about what gets lost in translation, a prompt for a poem, a story, a scientific observation, or a personal reflection. The frame is wide open.
  2. Shared Input — Participants write independently: 150–300 words, whatever form feels right.
  3. Distributed Response — The room reads aloud. Reacts. Debates. Refines.
  4. Versioned Synthesis — Accepted contributions are compiled into a cohesive new chapter of the work in progress.
  5. Disagreement doesn't get forced into consensus. It gets versioned. If your context differs from the main branch, you don't overwrite the original — you fork the perspective. Divergent voices are captured as parallel realities, not flattened into noise.

What you take home

  • Access to any Open Book session, anywhere — New York City and beyond
  • A digital copy of the in-progress Works Left Undone manuscript as it exists at the time of your session
  • The option to submit your contribution to the Works Left Undone repository for inclusion in a local or contextual fork of the material
  • Printable versions of work-in-progress drafts are available as digital products; canonical editions of the works will be published periodically as they reach a completion threshold

Who facilitates

Each Open Book session is hosted by a local author who brings their own interpretive lens — framed as Open Book for the _______ Mind — to speak to their selected community, or to offer that community as a window for others. The blank isn't decorative. It's the point. Every facilitator fills it differently.

Who this is for

Writers who've been sitting on something. Thinkers who've never called themselves writers. People who know the feeling of a work left undone — not from laziness, not from a lack of ideas, but because the infrastructure to compile it just hasn't existed yet.

Emerging creatives, neurodivergent thinkers, marginalized voices, first-time contributors: the ethos here is I build, you beautify. Partial contributions are the whole model. Misfit is treated as a signal, not a deficiency.

A note on what this is, actually

This isn't a reading. It's not a class. It's not a content machine.

It's a pull request on meaning. The books are the scaffold. The sessions are the human context that gives them truth-value. Your contribution — however partial, however strange, however unlike what you think "writing" is supposed to look like — is the whole point.

The infrastructure for collaborative truth requires human presence. Come be present.

Submit your pull request. Join the chorus.
